WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) - A group that wants Westerly Hospital to continue to perform childbirths is holding a candlelight walk.
The financially struggling hospital says it will stop delivering babies after June 1. The hospital is in receivership and Connecticut-based Lawrence & Memorial Hospital has agreed to purchase it.
A "Save Our Hospital" walk is planned for Thursday at 5:15 p.m. outside Westerly Middle School, before a public forum to discuss the hospital's future.
Joe Iacoi, who is among the community members organizing the walk, says they hope the receiver and Lawrence & Memorial will rethink the decision. Iacoi says that for Westerly Hospital to remain as a community hospital, it must continue childbirth services.
