Friends remember pregnant woman killed

EAST GREENWICH R.I. (WPRI) -- While the baby of a pregnant woman killed in a three car accident continues to recover in intensive care, friends and family remember the 23-year-old who did not survive the crash.

When Jonathen Wallace met Sullynette Sanchez of Providence, they were both students at the University of Rhode Island. Sanchez was most recently a URI staff member.

Over the years, their friendship flourished, as "Sully", as she was affectionately called, studied a martial art called Capoeira at Jonathen's studio.

"I think the one thing everyone is going to remember is her smile, her  personality. She's a really genuine person. I don't think you could meet anyone else who's going to care more, listen to you, be there for you no matter what," said Wallace.

Now, Jonathen, along with family and friends, is mourning the loss of of his dear friend.

"You look at it and it's like, I'm going to see her tomorrow, you know? But then you realize it's not going to happen," explained Wallace.

Sanchez was killed in a three-car crash Friday on Route 4 in East Greenwich. She was nine months pregnant. Her friends said she couldn't wait to become a mom and welcome her new baby.

"Oh, she was super excited. She was talking about it all the time," said Wallace.

Though Sanchez couldn't be saved, her unborn child survived the devastating accident.

"I saw the baby. It's a beautiful baby boy. He's breathing on his own now, so he's doing very well. The father was there, the family was all around. So everyone is trying to be supportive of him."

Sanchez's baby is at Women and Infants Hospital in Providence.

Meanwhile, one of the drivers involved in the crash said he may have been distracted when he rear-ended Sanchez.

According to The Providence Journal, State Police said the driver told paramedics he was distracted by a wallet that fell on the floor. The driver has not made a formal statement to police.

State Police are still investigating the accident.
