PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery is getting $1.1 million to improve operations and maintenance.
Sen. Jack Reed announced the grant on Tuesday. The money comes from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Cemetery Grants Program.
In 2007, Sen. Reed helped secure over $5.7 million to expand and renovate the cemetery. This money supported the construction of the new Administration and Honor Guard building, a public information center and new cremation niches.
This new funding will enhance the day-to-day operations of the cemetery.
Over 20,000 veterans and their eligible dependents are buried in Exeter.
The 265 acre property is one of the most active veterans cemeteries in the country.
