CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) -- A teenager is lucky to be alive following a hit-and-run, and a local teacher appeared in court Thursday to face charges in connection with the crash.

An arrest warrant was put out for Adriana Wright, 42, after a police investigation led to the discovery of her potential involvement. We've learned she's currently employed as a foreign language teacher at the Prout School in Wakefield.

Wright is accused of hitting a 16-year-old boy while he was walking along Route 2 near Lauri Drive in Charlestown on December 27.

"He was hit so hard that he was actually knocked right out of his shoes," said Lt. Pat McMahon of the Charlestown Police Department. "He sustained a concussion, he also sustained pretty significant abrasions and contusions that went along his abdomen, his chest cavity, down his legs, and his hip area."

The teenager then walked home with no recollection of the incident, but the marks told the story.

Wright was later taken into RI State Police custody after her car was found to have damage that could connect her to the hit-and-run. She was arraigned in Connecticut on a driving while intoxicated charge stemming from that same night.

Wright has no police record prior to this incident. She's due back in court on Feb. 22.
