NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- A visitors tent on the property of The Breakers mansion is coming down and will be replaced by a welcome center costing up to $5 million to build.
The Newport Daily News reports that the Preservation Society of Newport County is planning to replace the visitors tent with a welcome center. A vending machine shed and a toilet trailer also are to be replaced.
John G. Rodman, the society's director of museum experience, says designers will put the visitor center behind trees and will be as invisible as possible.
He says the first architectural renderings should available in September.
Rodman says it will not be what he calls a run-of-the-mill architectural project.
