TAUNTON, Mass. (WPRI) – There is superstition and there is luck, and one local man had both when he won $1 million on an instant scratch ticket.
Richard Brown bought the scratch ticket at the Valero on Weir Street in Taunton.
Instead of handing Brown the Blue Ice 7’s ticket he asked for, a distracted store clerk gave him a Sizzlin’ 7’s instant ticket.
Brown decided to keep the ticket he was given, and paid the clerk the $5 for the ticket.
Good thing he made that decision, because he won a $1 million top prize.
According to the Massachusetts State Lottery, Brown opted for the cash option, receiving a one-time lump sum payment of $650,000 before taxes.
Brown plans to put a new roof on his house and take a trip to San Francisco.
The Valero gas station will receive a $10,000 commission for the sale.
