BOSTON, Mass. (WPRI) – After successfully completing the nation’s first full face transplant back in March, Brigham and Women’s hospital is ready to tackle another medical milestone.

The Boston-based hospital will be the site for the first ever double arm transplant in the United States.

Two years ago, Texas mom Katy Hayes lost all of her limbs after a brief battle with strep infection. Four days after giving birth, Hayes slipped into a coma from the infection. In order to save her life, doctors amputated her legs and the majority of her arms.

Now, doctors are just waiting for the New England Organ Bank to find a suitable donor.

Even though she may never experience feeling or motion with her new hands, Hayes still faces six months of rehab following the surgery.
