RAYNHAM, Mass. (WPRI) – A statue of the Virgin Mary has been stolen from the grounds of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Raynham.

A maintenance worker noticed that the statue was missing Thursday morning and church officials notified police.

The statue sat near some bushes in an alcove next to the rectory, at the corner of North Main and Center streets.

Rev. John Murray says he's unsure of the value of the statue, and that the parish community hopes for the return of the statue and holds no ill will toward the thieves.

He speculated the incident might have been a prank.
