BOSTON (AP) -- A smoldering cable in Boston's subway system prompted a more than two-hour power shutdown that forced commuters riding trolleys between stations to walk down tunnels to exit the system.
An MBTA spokesman says firefighters responded to reports of smoke from an electric box about 100 feet outside the Arlington Street station just before 8 a.m. Wednesday.
The T shut off power at the request of firefighters. T employees then escorted riders on seven two-car trolleys down the tunnels and out of the stations.
There were no reports of injuries.
The problem forced commuters on three branches of the Green Line in the downtown area to the surface where buses shuttled them to their destinations.
Power was restored at about 10:30 a.m. and after testing, full service resumed at 10:50 a.m.
