NEW BEDFORD, Mass (WPRI) -- Two Rhode Island vandals won't be serving any jail time, but they will become very familiar with community service.
Shaun Marrow, 35, and Reddick Vaughan, 25, two of the three culprits of last year's vandalism spree in New Bedford, were ordered to pay $3,900 in restitution, perform a combined 900 hours of community service in New Bedford and serve three years' probation. This sentence was passed down after the duo pleaded guilty to 11 counts of tagging.
According to Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for the Bristol County District Attorney's office, both men will have to serve at least one day of service per week until they have completed their sentence. Also, their driver's licenses will be suspended for one year.
New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell told the New Bedford Standard Times he was disappointed with the outcome of the case, saying he believed they deserved to serve time in prison.
"This is no run-of-the-mill graffiti case," Mitchell said. He added that the properties they vandalized were "near and dear to the city's heart" and that their actions were done in a "calculated and deliberate way."
A third defendant in the vandalism case, Kyle Pollock, 27, is due in court on April 30.
