FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) -- The debate over the "Holiday Tree" at the Rhode Island State House has crossed the state line into Massachusetts.
Upon hearing of Governor Lincoln Chafee giving Rhode Islanders only 30 minutes notice for the tree lighting ceremony on Smith Hill, Fall River Mayor William Flanagan extended an invitation to Ocean State residents to attend his city's Christmas tree lighting on Saturday night.
"We just feel all Rhode Islanders were gypped. They didn't have an opportunity to go to their state house lighting of the tree and enjoy the tradition," he told Eyewitness News.
Flanagan also criticized Gov. Chafee for calling the tree at the State House a "holiday tree" instead of a Christmas tree.
"I believe the vast majority of citizens would agree this tree is called a Christmas tree," he said. "Unfortunately some political leaders bow to pressure and political correctness and break tradition."
Michael Trainor of Warren donated the tree to Fall River, and says he agrees with Mayor Flanagan.
"This is a Christmas tree," he said.
