BOURNE, Mass. (AP) -- Police say a Rhode Island man killed when his car struck a utility pole on Cape Cod may have hydroplaned and lost control.

Police say 25-year-old Justin Clare of Coventry, R.I., died after his car slammed into the pole on Route 28 in Bourne at about 9:20 a.m. Thursday.

Lt. Richard Tavares tells the Cape Cod Times the car appeared to have hydroplaned, before hitting the pole, splitting it in two. Clare was trapped in the car and pronounced dead at the scene. Roads were slick because of a nor'easter moving through the area.

NStar crews responded to shut off a power grid in the area to allow rescuers access to Clare.

The crash remains under investigation.
