NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) -- New Bedford police have arrested a man accused of threatening his girlfriend with a baseball bat and kidnapping his own son.

According to police, Richard Cruz, 37, of 79 Nash Road, walked into his girlfriend's home at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday armed with a bat and took their 2-month-old baby.

Cruz was spotted a short time later inside a nearby Dunkin Donuts holding the baby and the bat. He was taken into custody and the child was returned to the mother.

He's facing charges of breaking and entering in the daytime and putting a person in fear, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, and custodial kidnapping of a minor.
