BOSTON (AP) - The state panel overseeing casino gambling will hold another meeting as a key deadline approaches for companies hoping to win licenses to operate a casino or slots parlor.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has set a Jan. 15 deadline for developers to submit initial applications and pay a $400,000 application fee.

The commission is expected to discuss the process at its weekly meeting on Thursday.

As of Wednesday, MGM Resorts, Penn National Gaming and the Plainridge harness race track had submitted the"Phase 1" applications and paid the fee. Suffolk Downs had paid the $400,000 but not yet submitted its application.

Other companies have said they expect to meet the deadline.

The commission is expected to take several months reviewing the qualifications of applicants before moving on to a second and more competitive part of the licensing process.
