Mass. State Troopers help in NJ

FORT DIX, N.J. (WPRI) -- 25 members of the Massachusetts State Police have been deployed to New Jersey to assist with the state's recovery from Hurricane Sandy.

The troopers reported to Fort Dix on Saturday evening, and are working with troopers from New Jersey and Louisiana. Many of them have experience dealing with destructive storms over the last several years. However, State Police officials say the destruction their troopers have encountered in New Jersey is unlike anything they've encountered.

"Troopers are reporting whole communities have been decimated, houses removed from their foundations, roads wiped out, cars completely covered in sand and area inhabitants have been displaced with little hope of getting back into their homes anytime soon," State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said. "The area is also rife with various environmental hazards. Sink holes are a constant danger with raw sewerage and debris strewn everywhere."

The troopers are expected to be deployed for one week.
