FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) -- A lucky police officer in Fall River remains in good condition following a crash that left his motorcycle wedged underneath an SUV.

Officer Charles Freitas was riding on Route 24 when the SUV behind him was struck by a car from behind, which in turn crashed into his motorcycle.

At the time he was escorting a bus full of firefighters from the wake of Paul Chippendale, a 37-year-old firefighter who died Sunday after a battle with cancer.

Freitas was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. Police said Thursday that he is in good condition, but were unsure if he had been released or not.

Freitas is a 25-year veteran of the Fall River Police Department and is currently assigned to the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Unit.

We've learned the driver of the car that caused the crash was the teenage son of another police officer. So far no word if any charges will be brought against him or the driver of the SUV.
