FALL RIVER, MASS. (WPRI) -- Fall River officials say they have detected the West Nile Virus in mosquitos collected in the city.
The infected insects were trapped in the city's North End, near Oak Grove Cemetery. Crews from the Bristol County Mosquito Control Project will therefore spray the area around the Cemetery on Friday between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Officials say the area around Kennedy Park will also be sprayed at the same time.
Mayor Flanagan recommends that residents close their windows overnight and avoid going outside during the time when the spraying is taking place. The Mayor also reminded residents that they should take appropriate precautions against getting bitten by mosquitos. They include rescheduling outdoor activities taking place in the early morning or late afternoon, using insect repellent, installing or repairing screens in your windows at home, and draining standing water in your yard and around your home.
