Mass. man convicted of elderly neglect

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) -- A Fall River man has been found guilty of permitting serious injury to his elderly mother.

Filip Cruz, 58, of Douglas Street, was convicted of elderly neglect Friday after failing to care for 90-year-old mother, and allowing for infections on her body get so bad that they caused her death.

Police say they found his mother, Olivia Cruz, slumped over and unresponsive in her home. She was transported to the hospital, where doctors found her back to be covered in ulcers and rashes. She died less than a day later.

Cruz is due for sentencing on Sept. 12. He faces up to ten years in prison.
