ACUSHNET, Mass. (WPRI) – One woman has been hospitalized after she was burned in a late-night fire.

Firefighters received a call around 11 on Sunday night of a fire on Coulombe Street in Acushnet. One on duty firefighter arrived to find an active fire at a two story home.

Two more on-call firefighters joined to help put out the blaze.

Crews were able to rescue a 52-year-old woman who was trapped inside the burning home and got her to an ambulance where she was then flown by helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital.

"The firefighters responded quickly. I cannot over commend our 3 firefighters that went in under pretty heavy fire conditions and were able to remove this victim," said Acushnet Fire Chief, Kevin Gallagher.

The woman had serious burns on her feet and respiratory problems due to smoke, but is expected to be okay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation while crews believe it began on the second floor of the home.
