BOSTON (AP) — State health officials have confirmed the 20th case of West Nile in Massachusetts this summer.

The Department of Public Health said Thursday the new case is a Boston-area man in his 40s who was hospitalized but has been released.

That total is more than triple last year's six human cases. One person has died.

West Nile has been reported at higher levels around the country this year. Officials say a mild winter and warm spring may have led to more mosquitoes in Massachusetts.

There also have been seven cases of mosquito-borne Eastern equine encephalitis and two deaths. There were two cases and one death last year.
