137-year-old church could be torn down
St. Stephen's remains empty since '10

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) -- Should a historic church be torn down? The 137-year-old St. Stephen's Catholic Church just might, in April, unless someone steps in.
The Gothic Revival church, on South Main Street in the Dodgeville section of Attleboro, has been empty and unused since its congregation merged with St. Mary's in Seekonk in 2010, according to The Attleboro Sun Chronicle.
The Fall River Diocese confirmed Thursday to Eyewitness News that St. Stephen's is set to be demolished, along with its rectory and garage.
The pastor of the merged church in Seekonk, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, the Rev. Tom Rita, was not in town for comment Thursday.
The reason for tearing down St. Stephen's appears to be to expand the nearby cemetery, the Attleboro Sun reported.
