ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) - A veteran firefighter called Thursday night's fatal accident in Attleboro one of the worst he's ever seen.

The crash left a 24-year-old North Attleboro woman dead and another injured. Now, the surviving driver is charged with operating under the influence and vehicular homicide.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 152 and Wamsutta Road.

The head-on collision left both drivers trapped in their vehicles and firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to free them.

Attleboro's Deputy Fire Chief said it took rescue workers 25 minutes to extricate the woman from her badly damaged car.

“Her car was so badly mangled we actually had three sets of Jaws with about eight guys working on that vehicle all at the same time,” Deputy Chief Erik Guilette of the Attleboro Fire Department.

Both drivers were taken to Rhode Island Hospital for their injuries. The surviving driver, 32-year-old Jason Kwolek of Pawtucket, is at Rhode Island Hospital recovering with minor injuries.

Rhode Island State Police arrested Kwolek as a fugitive from justice and he is facing a string of charges.

Kwolek has been charged with vehicular homicide, OUI, operating to endanger and speeding.

“It doesn’t matter how many times you see it, it actually just kills me when I see somebody in that kind of a situation," continued Guilette.

Police in Plainville confirmed the suspect's vehicle, a Jeep, was also involved in a hit and run accident earlier in the evening.
