RI gambling dispute heads to trial

CGI disputing profits from Narragansett Tribe

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (AP/WPRI) - A $10 million dispute between the Narragansett Indian Tribe and its former gambling partner could be headed to trial after efforts at reaching a settlement failed.

Paul Beckwith, a lawyer for Capital Gaming International LLC, tells The Westerly Sun of Westerly that a trial date will likely be set later in March.

CGI alleges that when the Narragansetts began receiving a share of Twin River 's proceeds three years ago, it triggered the repayment of a $10 million promissory note the tribe signed that required monthly payments to CGI 60 days after the opening of "any gaming casino or similar facility, project or enterprise."

CGI claims the tribe's proceeds from Twin River are the same as if it opened its own facility.

The Narragansett tribe says it is only required to repay CGI if it gets its own casino.
