PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A federal appeals court has affirmed the corruption conviction of a former hospital executive in Providence.

The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday rejected an appeal from Robert Urciuoli, the former president and CEO of Roger Williams Medical Center.

Urciuoli was convicted in 2008 of hiring a state senator to do the hospital's bidding. He appealed, challenging the federal fraud statute under which he was convicted and arguing he never paid a bribe to the senator, John Celona.

The court said it was not persuaded by Urciuoli's arguments.
