PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI)- - Providence police and community leaders are determined to increase safety and decrease violence in the capital city.
Since the beginning of the year there have been eleven homicides in Providence. However, now local community groups and religious leaders are joining forces to stop crime and violence.
One week ago Friday 18-yer-old Luis Donminguez was shot to death on Waldo Street by a member of his own gang. Before that, 19-year-old Joshua Rosario was shot and killed. The previous week 29-year-old Paulo Barbosa was shot several times outside Club Balloons in Providence.
These deaths, among the many others, are why community leaders are calling for “community action” to help battle the growing violence.
Group leaders hold meetings frequently to discuss options and plans. However, they now plan to meet quarterly and perhaps even monthly with members of all groups to help expand the “Community Action” program.
