PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- State officials are hoping that the first hard frost of the year will help kill off a majority of the mosquito population.

Temperatures are scheduled to dip over the weekend with a frost hitting the area Saturday.

So will the upcoming frost kill off mosquitos and cut down the fear of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus?

Not likely. This frost will not be a typical hard-kill frost.

To get rid of all mosquitos, there typically needs to be a few successive nights of below freezing temperatures lasting for a few hours.

The Rhode Island Department of Emergency Management (DEM) says they will continue trapping and testing mosquitoes for the next few weeks.
