PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI)- Rhode Island's Congressional delegation is working to help reduce gun violence in the wake of the recent tragic school shooting.
Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Representatives Jim Langevin and David Cicilline held a news conference Friday morning at Federal Court.
The delegation discussed banning military assault weapons, limiting access to ammunition clips and strengthening background checks required to purchase a gun.
"These assault weapons are designed primarily to do one thing, to send a large volume of fire and to kill as many people as possible," Sen. Reed said.
"Assault weapons and these magazines that hold 30 or 100 rounds are weapons of war. They have no more business on our streets than an army tank," Langevin stated.
Although, the state's Congressional members are focusing on federal laws, some state leaders are also taking up a fight for stricter gun laws in Rhode Island.
