PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Muralist Johan Bjurman has started painting a giant mural designed by famous artist and Rhode Island School of Design graduate Shepard Fairey on the side of Trinity Repertory Company's Pell Chafee Auditorium.
The mural, which measures 38 feet by 80 feet, was commissioned by the arts organization AS220 as part of its 25th anniversary celebration.
"It's fun to be part of the community... doing something that's promoting arts in the city of Providence," Bjurman said.
The design pays homage to Providence's industrial past. It features city landmarks in Fairey's unique style.
"(Fairey) has very fond memories of his time in Providence," said AS220 artistic director Umberto Crenca. "And (he's) done it for practically nothing."
AS220 will present Fairey with an award during its Foo Fest Celebration.
Fairey became known around the world two years ago when his stenciled image of President Barack Obama became an iconic symbol.
He was later arrested in 2009 on street graffiti charges.
The mural is expected to be complete by Aug. 14. AS220 is selling a limited edition version which can be purchased at AS220.org.
