EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI)- The East Providence Water Pollution Control Facility received a $52 million upgrade recently.
The city is now in compliance with a 2007 consent order with the Rhode Island Department of Emergency Management.
United Water dedicated the facility at an event on Wednesday.
In 2010, United Water entered into a 10-year, design-build-operate contract for the city's 103-mile water collection system and the 10.4 million gallon per day wastewater treatment facility.
The recent upgrades has resulted in improved odor control, ability to contain more water and biological nitrogen removal. The nitrogen removal allows for pollution control in the Providence River and Narragansett Bay.
