EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI)- Pedestrians in East Providence have been forced to walk on the side of an Interstate 195 overpass for years, due to a blocked sidewalk.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) shut down the sidewalk on the Pawtucket Avenue overpass and put up concrete barriers after a truck hit the overpass and damaged two beams.
RIDOT installed two concrete barriers and a chain link gate, shutting down the sidewalk but not eliminating a traffic lane.
Mayor Bruce Rogers is considering this area a major safety problem that could result in serious injury or death.
