WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - The victim in a Providence police brutality case has been arrested in Warwick.
Police say 22-year-old Central Falls resident Luis Mendonca was arrested on Monday at J.C. Penny in the Warwick Mall on charges of shoplifting and obstructing an officer by providing a false name.
A jury in April convicted Providence police Detective Robert DeCarlo of assaulting Mendonca with a flashlight on Oct. 20, 2009 . State court spokesman Craig Berke says DeCarlo is free on bail pending sentencing. Berke says DeCarlo also has motions for a new trial and for a mistrial before the court.
Warwick police Lt. Jamie Calise says Mendonca was issued a summons to appear in the 3rd District Court in Warwick on Sept. 15.
An attorney for Mendonca could not be immediately reached.
