Mayor makes expensive paving request

Taveras asks to borrow $40 million to fix streets

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Four months after warning the city was close to bankruptcy, Providence's mayor is asking to borrow $40 million to resurface city streets.

Mayor Taveras described to Eyewitness News the condition of the streets in Providence.

"you go further down here and its like a dirt road almost, so we need to improve that but we don't have the capacity to do that," says Mayor Taveras.

The mayor's proposal comes just months after the city seemed to be nearing bankruptcy.

But Taveras says Providence is headed back in the right direction.

"This is not a loan to plug a budget hole.  This is a loan to rebuild the infrastructure of our city, if the voters decide that it's worth the investment," says Taveras.

The City Council must first pass the proposal.

If that happens, voters will ultimately decide whether to approve it in November.
