PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- State and federal offices in Rhode Island will be closed for Columbus Day.
Municipal offices are also closed as cities and towns celebrate Monday's holiday.
Many banks and some retail stores are closed.
Cities and towns around the state are celebrating Italian heritage with festivals and parades.
Providence's historic Federal Hill neighborhood is holding a three-day bash with food, entertainment and other festivities.
The fun began Saturday with a ceremony at DePasquale Square and featured a parade Sunday on Atwells Avenue with the 88th Army Band of the Rhode Island Army National Guard. Mayor Angel Taveras was among those who marched.
A portion of Atwells Avenue will remain closed to traffic through Monday evening.
The event is put on by the Federal Hill Commerce Association.
