Some sidewalks still not shoveled

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Even though it has been a couple of days since the winter storm barreled through New England, many sidewalks here in Rhode Island remain untouched.

As a property owner in Providence, a sidewalk caked with snow and ice can run-up a fine of hundreds of dollars. In addition, it could cause injury to pedestrians that have to trudge through the area.

A city ordinance says that shoveling must begin within 8 hours of the last snowflake to fall. A spokesperson for Mayor Angel Taveras says it was something that the city did not strictly enforce, until now.

Providence Emergency Management and the Department of Public Works have since created a better system of issuing tickets. Now, city property owners that routinely fail to shovel could pay anywhere from $25 to $500 in fines.
