PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- One of the state's shell fishing areas is being closed over discharge from a wastewater treatment facility in East Providence.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management says the Conimicut Triangle and Area A of Upper Narragansett Bay will be closed to shell fishing from sunrise Tuesday until March 5.

The department says "inadequate disinfection" at the Narragansett Bay Commission's Bucklin Point Wastewater Treatment Facility allowed the discharge of effluent to the Seekonk River that contained elevated fecal coliform levels.

DEM officials say the facility is working to meet stricter discharge limits. The department says it is reviewing the matter and working with commission staff.
