Whitehouse pushes for "Disclose" Act

RI's Whitehouse push for support for Disclose Act

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is urging colleagues in Congress to support a bill that would require more detailed disclosure requirements for campaign finance.

Whitehouse is the lead sponsor of the so-called "DISCLOSE Act" that would require outside political organizations that spend over $10,000 to report that spending to the Federal Election Commission within 24 hours. The measure also requires organizations that sponsor political ads to disclose their top funders.

That bill has garnered support in light of nonprofits funneling anonymous money to their affiliated super PACs, effectively shielding the names of some donors.

The bill is up for a procedural vote Monday evening.

Whitehouse says in a new video message released Saturday that the bill would enable voters to know who is trying to influence their votes and what their motives are.
