PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Providence Public School Department held a vaccination clinic for whooping cough Monday.
Children not up to date on their booster shot were offered vaccinations at the Gilbert Stuart Middle School.
On November 15, health officials reported that a student at the school came down with whooping cough. The student is now resting at home.
The illness, which is also known as pertussus, is characterized by a severe cough which worsens over time and is highly contagious.
A vaccination is required before children enter kindergarten, and another vaccination is recommended in seventh grade.
