PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island Hospital is getting $10.8 million in federal funds for research into joint health.

The hospital says the funding from the National Institutes of Health is for the second phase of a study into cartilage and joint diseases. The money will go to the hospital's Center of Biomedical Research Excellence in Skeletal Health and Repair. The grant will be paid out over five years.

The center got an $11 million grant in 2007 from NIH for the first phase of the study.

Officials say cartilage and joint diseases affect over 46 million people in the U.S. every year and are a leading cause of disability.

Hospital officials and members of the state's congressional delegation will formally announce the award at an event Monday morning.
