PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island has so far received a little more than $1 million in federal disaster aid to help recover from Superstorm Sandy.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says on Monday that residents and governments have received that amount in grants, loans or other assistance since Nov. 14, when President Barack Obama declared a major disaster for the state.

FEMA says more than 500 households have registered for assistance. They've received more than $800,000 worth of grants and loans to pay for repairs, rent, medical bills and other expenses.

The agency says 71 government entities and nonprofits have requested aid and received around $213,000 as of Sunday.

FEMA says anyone affected must register by Jan. 14 to qualify for help.
