EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - In the shadow of massive amounts of wealth – the nation’s newest millionaire was born in Rhode Island over the weekend. Lottery officials revealing today that the sole winning ticket for Saturday’s near-record $336 million lottery ticket was sold in Newport – just blocks away from the city’s famed mansions.

Officials from Rhode Island Lottery revealed Monday morning the winning ticket was sold at the Stop & Shop, located at 250 Bellevue Ave.

While the winner is still a mystery, the manager at the store said he was thrilled about the news.

“To be at my store is great. I mean we’re excited. Hopefully we see who it is, but we’re excited that it was sold here,” said Duane Maintland, store manager.

According to lottery officials, the lucky ticket was a $9 wager. There were three Quick Pick numbers on it with the PowerPlay option selected.

“It’s a very homey store. So, hopefully we know who it is. Also, there’s a lot of pools going on. So, hopefully the person will be someone that we all know and love," said shopper Kathleen Rodrigues.

The winning numbers were: 1-10-37-52-57 and Powerball 11.

A lottery spokeswoman says the jackpot is the sixth largest in U.S. history and the third-largest in Powerball history. The ticket price increased from $1 to $2 last month, and rising sales nearly doubled the Feb. 1 jackpot of $173.5 million.

Powerball is played in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The chance of matching all five numbers and the Powerball number is about 1 in 175 million.
