PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island's top Democrats -- and its independent governor -- are heading to North Carolina to participate in this year's Democratic National Convention.
Treasurer Gina Raimondo, U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and state Democratic Party Chairman Ed Pacheco are a few Rhode Island leaders planning to attend the convention in Charlotte, which starts Tuesday.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee, an independent, is scheduled to speak on opening night, even though he isn't a Democrat.
Chafee, a former Republican, says his remarks will focus on why he feels Americans of all political persuasions should back President Barack Obama's reelection.
