PROVIDENCE, R.I (WPRI) - The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing Thursday on a bill that would enact "Katie's Law" in Rhode Island.

The law is named after Katie Sepich, a 22-year-old graduate student at New Mexico State University, who was murdered in 2003 by Gabriel Avilla.

The bill would allow police to take DNA samples from individuals arrested for felonies.

Currently, Rhode Island law allows the collection of DNA samples only from those who are convicted.

Twenty-six other states have enacted "Katie's Law."
