PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI/AP) - A Rhode Island state panel is examining factors that lead to youth violence with the hope of finding better ways to prevent it.
The Special Senate Task force to Study Youth Violence is set to meet for the first time Monday at the West End Community Center in Providence.
State Sen. Juan Pichardo leads the task force. The General Assembly created the panel after the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy in December in Pichardo's Providence district.
Joel Figuereo of Providence was shot and killed at his home in November of 2011 ; it was the 12th homicide of the year for the City of Providence.
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and the Providence Police Department worked together with the community, asking for help in solving the horrific murder.
The task force plans to analyze the causes of youth violence and identify programs that can help prevent it.
