PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The jobless rate in Rhode Island ticked down in June, but the state lost 900 jobs from last month.

The state Department of Labor and Training reported Friday that the jobless rate fell to 10.9 percent, from 11 percent, the first time it's been under 11 percent since January.

The number of employed residents was 495,000, down 400. The size of the labor force was down 1,600, to 555,200, in May and down 8,200 from a year ago.

The state shed 900 jobs from last month's revised figures, most in the retail trade sector. Eight-hundred jobs were added in repair and maintenance services and civic and social organizations.

The national unemployment rate in June was 8.2 percent.

Rhode Island's jobless rate has been the country's second highest.
