PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - State leaders will convene Tuesday night to discuss bills on decriminalizing marijuana.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing at 5:30 p.m. in Room 313.
The House Judiciary Committee will be holding a separate hearing simultaneously in the House Lounge.
The bill on tap for discussion is sponsored by Sen. Joshua Miller and Rep. John G. Edwards.
If passed, the legislation would eliminate the criminal charge for carrying one ounce or less of marijuana. Violators would instead be charged with a civil penalty of a $150 fine and forfeiture of the drug.
In addition, minors would be required to complete an approved drug awareness program and community service.
Under the current law, possession of even small amounts of marijuana is a misdemeanor and punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $500.
