PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Rhode Island lawmakers are poised to vote on a plan that would force drivers to pay when crossing a local bridge.
Under the proposal, the ownership of the Sakonnet River bridge and the Jamestown Bridge would transfer from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation to the Bridge and Turnpike Authority.
Representative John Edwards said tolls would be devastating for tourism.
He suggested putting tolls on Interstate 95, the Iway, or on Route 146.
The exact amount of the tolls has not been set yet, but officials believe it will most likely be 83 cents each way with an in-state EZ Pass and $4 for everyone else.
