(WPRI) - Some states are feeling the heat more these days than others.

Rhode Island ranked first as the fastest warming state in the country, followed by Massachusetts.

Scientists from Climate Central calculated the average daily high and low temperatures for each state to determine which ones were most affected by climate change.

In the study, scientists determined how much the average daily temperatures changed each decade over the past 100 years.

The top 10 fastest-warming states in descending order:

  • Rhode Island
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • Arizona
  • Maine
  • Connecticut
  • Michigan
  • Utah
  • Minnesota
  • Colorado

The 10 slowest-warming states:

  • Alabama
  • Georgia
  • Arkansas
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Louisiana
  • Tennessee
  • South Carolina
  • Missouri
  • West Virginia

Since 1912, the top 10 fastest warming states warmed 60 times faster than the bottom 10 states.

Researchers suggest natural climate variability played a role in the findings.
