Rep. pushes for tax reimbursement system

Bill examines motor vehicle excise tax

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Cities and towns could soon be receiving reimbursements for motor vehicle excise tax.

The reimbursements would be based on the percentage of assessed vehicle values in each community.

Three years ago, the state removed motor vehicle reimbursements, which was highly protested from taxpayers all over the state.

The bill proposed by Representative Jared Nunes, would give reimbursements based on car values, instead of individual tax rates.

Nunes says that most communities would receive more than they were getting during the previous reimbursement program, and others would receive less.

“The important thing is that it’s equitable because right now, people in West Warwick and Coventry are subsidizing the reimbursements for cities like Providence and Woonsocket,” he said.

The reimbursements which would total $10 million for the entire state would be distributed from the state general revenue fund.
