PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Three wind turbines that have been idle over the past eight months while towering over Providence's waterfront will be getting their first test spins.

A Narragansett Bay Commission spokeswoman told The Providence Journal that the 364-feet-tall turbines will be tested on Tuesday and will be put into full operation soon afterward. They are the only large turbines in Providence and are among the largest in the state, reaching the same heights as one in Portsmouth and another being constructed in North Kingstown.

The turbines are expected to provide 40 percent of the power at the commission's Fields Point wastewater treatment plant, where the electricity bill totals $2.5 million a year.

Commission spokeswoman Jamie Samons says the turbines are ready to go, but need to be tested first.
