Providence, R.I. (AP) - Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is urging residents to shop at local businesses this holiday season.

Taveras, leaders from the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce and local merchants plan to kick off the holidays with an event Tuesday to encourage shoppers to patronize local businesses.

Taveras also plans to launch a campaign to promote the work of local artists.

Providence is offering shoppers two hours of free parking within main commercial districts until Jan. 1.

Downtown Providence and shopping areas on Thayer Street, Atwells Avenue, Hope Street and Wickenden Street are covered in the new holiday parking policy.
